How to Make Potato Donuts

Potato donuts are a delicious variation of traditional donuts, made with mashed potatoes to create a softer texture and richer flavor. With their signature round shape and hole in the center, these homemade potato donuts are perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

- 500 grams high-protein flour
- 4 eggs
- 250 grams potatoes
- 250 grams butter
- 11 grams instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3 tablespoons full-cream milk powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 100 ml water
- Cooking oil for frying

Topping Ingredients

- 100 grams dark cooking chocolate (DCC) or 1 chocolate bar
- 2 tablespoons margarine
- Chocolate sprinkles or powdered sugar as desired

How to Make Potato Donuts

1. Cut the potatoes into several pieces and boil until fully cooked.

2. Mash or blend the potatoes until completely smooth.

3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, milk powder, yeast, eggs, baking powder, and mashed potatoes.

4. Mix the ingredients thoroughly for about 20 minutes.

5. Knead the dough until it becomes partially smooth, then let it rest for 30 minutes until it rises.

6. Avoid mixing yeast, butter, and salt together at the beginning, as this may prevent the dough from rising properly.

7. After the dough has risen, add the salt, butter, and water.

8. Continue kneading for approximately 10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

Note:

A properly kneaded dough should feel elastic and smooth. Potato donut dough may remain slightly sticky because of the mashed potatoes, which is normal.

9. Divide the dough into several portions and let them rest for another 15 minutes.

10. Shape each portion into a donut by forming a hole in the center. You may also create other shapes according to your preference.

11. Heat cooking oil over low heat.

12. Fry the donuts until golden brown on both sides.

13. Using a chopstick or similar tool while frying can help maintain a perfect round shape.

For best results, use plenty of oil and fry over low heat. The donuts should float partially in the oil rather than touching the bottom of the pan.

How to Prepare the Chocolate Topping

1. Chop the chocolate into small pieces.

2. Place the margarine and chocolate into a non-stick pan.

3. Heat gently until the chocolate melts completely.

4. Turn off the heat immediately once melted to prevent the chocolate from burning.

5. Dip the top side of each donut into the melted chocolate.

6. Sprinkle chocolate sprinkles over the chocolate coating.

7. Allow the topping to set before serving.

Serving Suggestion

Serve the potato donuts warm with coffee, tea, or milk. Their soft texture and rich chocolate topping make them a favorite treat for both children and adults.

Enjoy your homemade potato donuts and happy baking!
