Demonstrators Attempt to Break Through Security Barricades at Bundaran HI, Jakarta

Jakarta, June 12, 2026 - A student-led demonstration at the Bundaran HI area in Central Jakarta turned tense when a group of protesters attempted to push through security barricades guarded by military and police personnel on Friday.

The protest was part of a movement titled "Towards a Bankrupt Indonesia," organized by the Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI) along with several other student organizations.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered around Bundaran HI from the morning hours, carrying banners and posters criticizing government policies. The protesters expressed concerns about the national economy, rising living costs, fuel prices, and several government programs that have become the focus of public debate.

Tensions escalated when a number of demonstrators moved closer to the restricted area secured by authorities. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show protesters pushing against barricades while demanding access to areas closer to the main protest location.

Security personnel responded by strengthening the security perimeter to prevent demonstrators from crossing the restricted zone. Several moments of pushing and shoving were reported, although the situation remained largely under control.

Reports from the scene also indicated the presence of online motorcycle taxi drivers, commonly known as "ojol" drivers. Some videos appeared to show individuals wearing ride-hailing uniforms near the protest area. However, no official statement has confirmed whether any specific driver organization was formally involved in the demonstration.

Authorities had previously implemented extensive security measures throughout the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor in anticipation of large crowds. Motorists were advised to avoid the Bundaran HI area due to heavy traffic congestion caused by the demonstration.

During the protest, student representatives presented five main demands:

1. Stop wasteful state budget spending.

2. Reduce the prices of basic necessities and fuel.

3. Halt the Free Nutritious Meal Program and the Merah Putih Village Cooperative development program.

4. End military involvement in civilian affairs.

5. Acknowledge and correct government policies that are considered harmful to the public.

As of late afternoon, authorities reported that the situation remained under control despite several confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel. No official reports of fatalities or major property damage had been released at the time of reporting.

Officials continue to monitor the situation while maintaining security measures around the protest area.
