More Than 8,000 People Applied to Renounce Indonesian Citizenship Over the Past Five Years

Indonesia's Ministry of Law (Kemenkum) has revealed that more than 8,000 applications for the renunciation of Indonesian citizenship have been submitted over the past five years.

According to the ministry, the majority of applicants chose to relinquish their Indonesian citizenship for reasons related to education, employment opportunities, and marriage to foreign nationals.

Dulyono, Director of State Administration at the Directorate General of General Legal Administration (AHU), stated that the number could continue to rise as more Indonesians pursue opportunities abroad and international mobility increases.

Key Reasons for Renouncing Indonesian Citizenship:

• Educational opportunities in foreign countries.

• Better career prospects and employment opportunities overseas.

• Marriage to foreign nationals.

• Naturalization processes to obtain citizenship in another country.

Government officials noted that globalization and increasing international mobility have encouraged more Indonesians to study, work, and settle abroad. In many cases, individuals seeking permanent residency or citizenship in another country are required to renounce their original nationality as part of the naturalization process.

The Ministry of Law continues to monitor citizenship applications and related legal processes to ensure compliance with Indonesian nationality laws and regulations.
